Since trace elements are involved in virtually all biological processes, biometals research is relevant and can be applied across the areas of biomedical and health research. Ongoing research in the group addresses the involvement of iron, zinc and copper in nutrition, and in biology of diabetes, cancer, kidney disease, muscle wasting, and neurodegenerative diseases. There is ongoing interest in research in the department on ferroptosis and the associated disorders. Also of interest is the molecular mechanism of the functions of transmembrane metal ion transport proteins.
